Serotonin is a very important neuro-transmitter known as “the feel good neurotransmitter” implicated in the regulation of sleep, depression, anxiety, aggression, appetite, temperature, sexual behaviour, and pain sensation.

5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) is produced in the body from the essential amino acid L-tryptophan. It is converted to the neurotransmitter serotonin. Taking 5-HTP as a supplement increases the production of serotonin by the central nervous system (CNS). Supplemental 5-HTP is produced commercially from the seeds of a West African plant known as Griffonia simplicifolia.

5-HTP functions as the precursor for serotonin, and is converted to serotonin in a pyridoxal phosphate (vitamin B6) dependent reaction, catalyzed by the enzyme L-amino acid decarboxylase.
